COMING SOON | Church Membership Directory!!

It’s been several years since our church has done a membership directory and we’re bringing it back! Over the course of January, Jim will have his camera set up in the Parlor. Following morning worship on any Sunday during January, step back there to have a family picture taken.  The digital version of your family picture will be emailed to you, so you can print a copy for your home!

After all the pictures are taken and assembled, we anticipate the directory will take about a month to create.  We hope to have the final, printed version complete in March.  

Men's Breakfast Saturday morning 8 AM. 
Coffee will be on at 6:30 so come early to visit and bring a friend.

Announcements:
  Sunday we will undecorate the church following morning worship.
  Jim will be in FL Jan 8-12. 
  Annual Congregational Meeting is Sunday, January 14th following morning worship.
  Elder Training will be Saturday, January 20, 9 AM to 1 PM at the McMillan cabins.

Scripture for Sunday
John 1:29-45 (ESV)  

The next day he saw Jesus coming toward him, and said, "Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!  [30] This is he of whom I said, 'After me comes a man who ranks before me, because he was before me.'  [31] I myself did not know him, but for this purpose I came baptizing with water, that he might be revealed to Israel."  [32] And John bore witness: "I saw the Spirit descend from heaven like a dove, and it remained on him.  [33] I myself did not know him, but he who sent me to baptize with water said to me, 'He on whom you see the Spirit descend and remain, this is he who baptizes with the Holy Spirit.'  [34] And I have seen and have borne witness that this is the Son of God." 

[35] The next day again John was standing with two of his disciples,  [36] and he looked at Jesus as he walked by and said, "Behold, the Lamb of God!"  [37] The two disciples heard him say this, and they followed Jesus.  [38] Jesus turned and saw them following and said to them, "What are you seeking?" And they said to him, "Rabbi" (which means Teacher), "where are you staying?"  [39] He said to them, "Come and you will see." So they came and saw where he was staying, and they stayed with him that day, for it was about the tenth hour.  [40] One of the two who heard John speak and followed Jesus was Andrew, Simon Peter's brother.  [41] He first found his own brother Simon and said to him, "We have found the Messiah" (which means Christ).  [42] He brought him to Jesus. Jesus looked at him and said, "So you are Simon the son of John? You shall be called Cephas" (which means Peter).

[43] The next day Jesus decided to go to Galilee. He found Philip and said to him, "Follow me."  [44] Now Philip was from Bethsaida, the city of Andrew and Peter.  [45] Philip found Nathanael and said to him, "We have found him of whom Moses in the Law and also the prophets wrote, Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph."  

Christmas Play this Sunday (12/17/17)

The Christmas Play is this Sunday, December 17th during our regular worship hour.  Please have all play participants here by 9:30 that morning. Breakfast starts at 9:45, please bring a breakfast dish to share.

Bob Winship is in Shannon Hospital and would appreciate our prayers.

Mark 1:1-8 (ESV)  
The beginning of the gospel of Jesus Christ, the Son of God.
    [2] As it is written in Isaiah the prophet,
    "Behold, I send my messenger before your face,
        who will prepare your way,
    [3] the voice of one crying in the wilderness:
        Prepare the way of the Lord,
        make his paths straight."

   [4] John appeared, baptizing in the wilderness and proclaiming a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins.  [5] And all the country of Judea and all Jerusalem were going out to him and were being baptized by him in the river Jordan, confessing their sins.  [6] Now John was clothed with camel's hair and wore a leather belt around his waist and ate locusts and wild honey.  [7] And he preached, saying, "After me comes he who is mightier than I, the strap of whose sandals I am not worthy to stoop down and untie.  [8] I have baptized you with water, but he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit."

The Kimble County Youth Show is tomorrow.  Come support our youth. 

Rehearsals for the Children’s Christmas Play begins this Sunday and will continue during the Sunday School hour each week until December 17th.

Mark 13:24-37

24 "But in those days, after that tribulation, the sun will be darkened, and the moon will not give its light,  25 and the stars will be falling from heaven, and the powers in the heavens will be shaken.  26 And then they will see the Son of Man coming in clouds with great power and glory.  27 And then he will send out the angels and gather his elect from the four winds, from the ends of the earth to the ends of heaven.  28 "From the fig tree learn its lesson: as soon as its branch becomes tender and puts out its leaves, you know that summer is near.  29 So also, when you see these things taking place, you know that he is near, at the very gates.  30 Truly, I say to you, this generation will not pass away until all these things take place.  31 Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will not pass away.  32 "But concerning that day or that hour, no one knows, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father.  33 Be on guard, keep awake. For you do not know when the time will come.  34 It is like a man going on a journey, when he leaves home and puts his servants in charge, each with his work, and commands the doorkeeper to stay awake.  35 Therefore stay awake- for you do not know when the master of the house will come, in the evening, or at midnight, or when the cock crows, or in the morning- 36 lest he come suddenly and find you asleep.  37 And what I say to you I say to all: Stay awake."

Announcements
Last Sunday was pretty amazing for us.  The Thanksgiving lunch was a big success; thank you all for coming. For others, it was a day of fear, grief and tragedy. The people of 1st Baptist Sutherland Springs never expected evil to enter their sanctuary.  Now, we will have to be more vigilant.

We will have a brief congregational meeting Sunday to elect four people to the nominating committee. They will be seeking three people to serve as Elders for the class of 2020.

Monday, I will be flying to Florida to help my dad some more.  I will return Friday.

1 Kings 19:1-21 (ESV)  

Ahab told Jezebel all that Elijah had done, and how he had killed all the prophets with the sword.  [2] Then Jezebel sent a messenger to Elijah, saying, "So may the gods do to me and more also, if I do not make your life as the life of one of them by this time tomorrow."  [3] Then he was afraid, and he arose and ran for his life and came to Beersheba, which belongs to Judah, and left his servant there. [4] But he himself went a day's journey into the wilderness and came and sat down under a broom tree. And he asked that he might die, saying, "It is enough; now, O Lord, take away my life, for I am no better than my fathers."  [5] And he lay down and slept under a broom tree. And behold, an angel touched him and said to him, "Arise and eat."  [6] And he looked, and behold, there was at his head a cake baked on hot stones and a jar of water. And he ate and drank and lay down again.  [7] And the angel of the Lord came again a second time and touched him and said, "Arise and eat, for the journey is too great for you."  [8] And he arose and ate and drank, and went in the strength of that food forty days and forty nights to Horeb, the mount of God. 

[9] There he came to a cave and lodged in it. And behold, the word of the Lord came to him, and he said to him, "What are you doing here, Elijah?"  [10] He said, "I have been very jealous for the Lord, the God of hosts. For the people of Israel have forsaken your covenant, thrown down your altars, and killed your prophets with the sword, and I, even I only, am left, and they seek my life, to take it away."  [11] And he said, "Go out and stand on the mount before the Lord." And behold, the Lord passed by, and a great and strong wind tore the mountains and broke in pieces the rocks before the Lord, but the Lord was not in the wind. And after the wind an earthquake, but the Lord was not in the earthquake.  [12] And after the earthquake a fire, but the Lord was not in the fire. And after the fire the sound of a low whisper.  [13] And when Elijah heard it, he wrapped his face in his cloak and went out and stood at the entrance of the cave. And behold, there came a voice to him and said, "What are you doing here, Elijah?"  [14] He said, "I have been very jealous for the Lord, the God of hosts. For the people of Israel have forsaken your covenant, thrown down your altars, and killed your prophets with the sword, and I, even I only, am left, and they seek my life, to take it away."  [15] And the Lord said to him, "Go, return on your way to the wilderness of Damascus. And when you arrive, you shall anoint Hazael to be king over Syria.  [16] And Jehu the son of Nimshi you shall anoint to be king over Israel, and Elisha the son of Shaphat of Abel-meholah you shall anoint to be prophet in your place.  [17] And the one who escapes from the sword of Hazael shall Jehu put to death, and the one who escapes from the sword of Jehu shall Elisha put to death.  [18] Yet I will leave seven thousand in Israel, all the knees that have not bowed to Baal, and every mouth that has not kissed him." 

[19] So he departed from there and found Elisha the son of Shaphat, who was plowing with twelve yoke of oxen in front of him, and he was with the twelfth. Elijah passed by him and cast his cloak upon him.  [20] And he left the oxen and ran after Elijah and said, "Let me kiss my father and my mother, and then I will follow you." And he said to him, "Go back again, for what have I done to you?"  [21] And he returned from following him and took the yoke of oxen and sacrificed them and boiled their flesh with the yokes of the oxen and gave it to the people, and they ate. Then he arose and went after Elijah and assisted him.
