Help decorate the church for Christmas.

Chili will be served at 5:30 PM.

Practice for the Christmas Play begins Sunday, Dec 3rd. 

Please have children at the church by 9:45 AM.

The Children's Christmas Play will be Sunday, Dec 17th 

during our normal worship hour (11 AM).

We will have a church family breakfast at 9:45 AM.

Last Sunday was pretty amazing for us.  The Thanksgiving lunch was a big success; thank you all for coming. For others, it was a day of fear, grief and tragedy. The people of 1st Baptist Sutherland Springs never expected evil to enter their sanctuary.  Now, we will have to be more vigilant.

We will have a brief congregational meeting Sunday to elect four people to the nominating committee. They will be seeking three people to serve as Elders for the class of 2020.

Monday, I will be flying to Florida to help my dad some more.  I will return Friday.

Amos 5:14-24 (ESV)  
    Seek good, and not evil,
        that you may live;
    and so the Lord, the God of hosts, will be with you,
        as you have said.
    [15] Hate evil, and love good,
        and establish justice in the gate;
    it may be that the Lord, the God of hosts,
        will be gracious to the remnant of Joseph.
 [16] Therefore thus says the Lord, the God of hosts, the Lord:
    "In all the squares there shall be wailing,
        and in all the streets they shall say, 'Alas! Alas!'
    They shall call the farmers to mourning
        and to wailing those who are skilled in lamentation,

        for I will pass through your midst,"
says the Lord.
    [18] Woe to you who desire the day of the Lord!
        Why would you have the day of the Lord?
    It is darkness, and not light,
        [19] as if a man fled from a lion,

Men's Breakfast Saturday morning 8 AM. Coffee will be on at 6:30 so come early to visit and bring a friend.

Thanksgiving Lunch following worship Sunday.  The church is providing Smoked Turkey, Pulled Pork, and dressing.

1 Kings 19:1-21 (ESV)  

Ahab told Jezebel all that Elijah had done, and how he had killed all the prophets with the sword.  [2] Then Jezebel sent a messenger to Elijah, saying, "So may the gods do to me and more also, if I do not make your life as the life of one of them by this time tomorrow."  [3] Then he was afraid, and he arose and ran for his life and came to Beersheba, which belongs to Judah, and left his servant there. [4] But he himself went a day's journey into the wilderness and came and sat down under a broom tree. And he asked that he might die, saying, "It is enough; now, O Lord, take away my life, for I am no better than my fathers."  [5] And he lay down and slept under a broom tree. And behold, an angel touched him and said to him, "Arise and eat."  [6] And he looked, and behold, there was at his head a cake baked on hot stones and a jar of water. And he ate and drank and lay down again.  [7] And the angel of the Lord came again a second time and touched him and said, "Arise and eat, for the journey is too great for you."  [8] And he arose and ate and drank, and went in the strength of that food forty days and forty nights to Horeb, the mount of God. 

[9] There he came to a cave and lodged in it. And behold, the word of the Lord came to him, and he said to him, "What are you doing here, Elijah?"  [10] He said, "I have been very jealous for the Lord, the God of hosts. For the people of Israel have forsaken your covenant, thrown down your altars, and killed your prophets with the sword, and I, even I only, am left, and they seek my life, to take it away."  [11] And he said, "Go out and stand on the mount before the Lord." And behold, the Lord passed by, and a great and strong wind tore the mountains and broke in pieces the rocks before the Lord, but the Lord was not in the wind. And after the wind an earthquake, but the Lord was not in the earthquake.  [12] And after the earthquake a fire, but the Lord was not in the fire. And after the fire the sound of a low whisper.  [13] And when Elijah heard it, he wrapped his face in his cloak and went out and stood at the entrance of the cave. And behold, there came a voice to him and said, "What are you doing here, Elijah?"  [14] He said, "I have been very jealous for the Lord, the God of hosts. For the people of Israel have forsaken your covenant, thrown down your altars, and killed your prophets with the sword, and I, even I only, am left, and they seek my life, to take it away."  [15] And the Lord said to him, "Go, return on your way to the wilderness of Damascus. And when you arrive, you shall anoint Hazael to be king over Syria.  [16] And Jehu the son of Nimshi you shall anoint to be king over Israel, and Elisha the son of Shaphat of Abel-meholah you shall anoint to be prophet in your place.  [17] And the one who escapes from the sword of Hazael shall Jehu put to death, and the one who escapes from the sword of Jehu shall Elisha put to death.  [18] Yet I will leave seven thousand in Israel, all the knees that have not bowed to Baal, and every mouth that has not kissed him." 

[19] So he departed from there and found Elisha the son of Shaphat, who was plowing with twelve yoke of oxen in front of him, and he was with the twelfth. Elijah passed by him and cast his cloak upon him.  [20] And he left the oxen and ran after Elijah and said, "Let me kiss my father and my mother, and then I will follow you." And he said to him, "Go back again, for what have I done to you?"  [21] And he returned from following him and took the yoke of oxen and sacrificed them and boiled their flesh with the yokes of the oxen and gave it to the people, and they ate. Then he arose and went after Elijah and assisted him.

1 Samuel 15:34-16:13 (ESV)  

Then Samuel went to Ramah, and Saul went up to his house in Gibeah of Saul.  [35] And Samuel did not see Saul again until the day of his death, but Samuel grieved over Saul. And the Lord regretted that he had made Saul king over Israel. 

[16:1] The Lord said to Samuel, "How long will you grieve over Saul, since I have rejected him from being king over Israel? Fill your horn with oil, and go. I will send you to Jesse the Bethlehemite, for I have provided for myself a king among his sons."  [2] And Samuel said, "How can I go? If Saul hears it, he will kill me." And the Lord said, "Take a heifer with you and say, 'I have come to sacrifice to the Lord.'  [3] And invite Jesse to the sacrifice, and I will show you what you shall do. And you shall anoint for me him whom I declare to you."  [4] Samuel did what the Lord commanded and came to Bethlehem. The elders of the city came to meet him trembling and said, "Do you come peaceably?"  [5] And he said, "Peaceably; I have come to sacrifice to the Lord. Consecrate yourselves, and come with me to the sacrifice." And he consecrated Jesse and his sons and invited them to the sacrifice. 

[6] When they came, he looked on Eliab and thought, "Surely the Lord's anointed is before him."  [7] But the Lord said to Samuel, "Do not look on his appearance or on the height of his stature, because I have rejected him. For the Lord sees not as man sees: man looks on the outward appearance, but the Lord looks on the heart."  [8] Then Jesse called Abinadab and made him pass before Samuel. And he said, "Neither has the Lord chosen this one."  [9] Then Jesse made Shammah pass by. And he said, "Neither has the Lord chosen this one."  [10] And Jesse made seven of his sons pass before Samuel. And Samuel said to Jesse, "The Lord has not chosen these."  [11] Then Samuel said to Jesse, "Are all your sons here?" And he said, " There remains yet the youngest, but behold, he is keeping the sheep." Announcements:

• Men's Breakfast Saturday morning 8 AM. Coffee will be on at 6:30 so come early to visit and bring a friend.
• Kimble County EMS is having a BBQ cook off this weekend to raise  money for our service. Judges are needed! Please contact Ted Sandlin if you are willing to help.
• Jim will be out of the office Monday October 9-16. Jim is going to Florida to make sure his dad's house is livable.  It suffered some damage from hurricane Irma. Jim's dad is getting rehab from surgery at a facility in Leesburg, FL. 
• Wednesday October 11th at 6 PM we will be having a spaghetti dinner catered by Brian and Bobby Lyn McLaughlin followed by a program from Charles and Melissa Johnson, Presbyterian missionaries serving in Zambia.

Have you not known? Have you not heard? The Lord is the everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the earth. He does not faint or grow weary; his understanding is unsearchable. [29] He gives power to the faint, and to him who has no might he increases strength. [30] Even youths shall faint and be weary, and young men shall fall exhausted; [31] but they who wait for the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles; they shall run and not be weary; they shall walk and not faint.

John 6:16-21 (ESV)  

[16] When evening came, his disciples went down to the sea,  [17] got into a boat, and started across the sea to Capernaum. It was now dark, and Jesus had not yet come to them.  [18] The sea became rough because a strong wind was blowing.  [19] When they had rowed about three or four miles, they saw Jesus walking on the sea and coming near the boat, and they were frightened.  [20] But he said to them, "It is I; do not be afraid."  [21] Then they were glad to take him into the boat, and immediately the boat was at the land to which they were going.

Exodus 3:1-15 (ESV)  

Now Moses was keeping the flock of his father-in-law, Jethro, the priest of Midian, and he led his flock to the west side of the wilderness and came to Horeb, the mountain of God.  [2] And the angel of the Lord appeared to him in a flame of fire out of the midst of a bush. He looked, and behold, the bush was burning, yet it was not consumed.  [3] And Moses said, "I will turn aside to see this great sight, why the bush is not burned."  [4] When the Lord saw that he turned aside to see, God called to him out of the bush, "Moses, Moses!" And he said, "Here I am."  [5] Then he said, "Do not come near; take your sandals off your feet, for the place on which you are standing is holy ground."  [6] And he said, "I am the God of your father, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob." And Moses hid his face, for he was afraid to look at God. 

[7] Then the Lord said, "I have surely seen the affliction of my people who are in Egypt and have heard their cry because of their taskmasters. I know their sufferings,  [8] and I have come down to deliver them out of the hand of the Egyptians and to bring them up out of that land to a good and broad land, a land flowing with milk and honey, to the place of the Canaanites, the Hittites, the Amorites, the Periz-zites, the Hivites, and the Jebusites.  [9] And now, behold, the cry of the people of Israel has come to me, and I have also seen the oppression with which the Egyptians oppress them.  [10] Come, I will send you to Pharaoh that you may bring my people, the children of Israel, out of Egypt."  [11] But Moses said to God, "Who am I that I should go to Pharaoh and bring the children of Israel out of Egypt?"  [12] He said, "But I will be with you, and this shall be the sign for you, that I have sent you: when you have brought the people out of Egypt, you shall serve God on this mountain." 

[13] Then Moses said to God, "If I come to the people of Israel and say to them, 'The God of your fathers has sent me to you,' and they ask me, 'What is his name?' what shall I say to them?"  [14] God said to Moses, "I AM WHO I AM." And he said, "Say this to the people of Israel, 'I AM has sent me to you.' "  [15] God also said to Moses, "Say this to the people of Israel, 'The Lord, the God of your fathers, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob, has sent me to you.' This is my name forever, and thus I am to be remembered throughout all generations.  

Exodus 4:1-5 (ESV)  

Then Moses answered, "But behold, they will not believe me or listen to my voice, for they will say, 'The Lord did not appear to you.' "  [2] The Lord said to him, "What is that in your hand?" He said, "A staff."  [3] And he said, "Throw it on the ground." So he threw it on the ground, and it became a serpent, and Moses ran from it.  [4] But the Lord said to Moses, "Put out your hand and catch it by the tail"—so he put out his hand and caught it, and it became a staff in his hand— [5] "that they may believe that the Lord, the God of their fathers, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob, has appeared to you."  

Exodus 4:10-16 (ESV)  

But Moses said to the Lord, "Oh, my Lord, I am not eloquent, either in the past or since you have spoken to your servant, but I am slow of speech and of tongue."  [11] Then the Lord said to him, "Who has made man's mouth? Who makes him mute, or deaf, or seeing, or blind? Is it not I, the Lord?  [12] Now therefore go, and I will be with your mouth and teach you what you shall speak."  [13] But he said, "Oh, my Lord, please send someone else."  [14] Then the anger of the Lord was kindled against Moses and he said, "Is there not Aaron, your brother, the Levite? I know that he can speak well. Behold, he is coming out to meet you, and when he sees you, he will be glad in his heart.  [15] You shall speak to him and put the words in his mouth, and I will be with your mouth and with his mouth and will teach you both what to do.  [16] He shall speak for you to the people, and he shall be your mouth, and you shall be as God to him.
