Scripture for Sunday (12/30/18)

Happy New Year!
We will not be having Sunday School this Sunday; worship at 11 AM.

Scriptures for Sunday
Colossians 3:12-17 (ESV)
12 Put on then, as God’s chosen ones, holy and beloved, compassionate hearts, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience, 13 bearing with one another and, if one has a complaint against another, forgiving each other; as the Lord has forgiven you, so you also must forgive. 14 And above all these put on love, which binds everything together in perfect harmony. 15 And let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, to which indeed you were called in one body. And be thankful. 16 Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom, singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, with thankfulness in your hearts to God. 17 And whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.

Luke 2:41-52 (ESV)
Now his parents went to Jerusalem every year at the Feast of the Passover.  [42] And when he was twelve years old, they went up according to custom. [43] And when the feast was ended, as they were returning, the boy Jesus stayed behind in Jerusalem. His parents did not know it, [44] but supposing him to be in the group they went a day's journey, but then they began to search for him among their relatives and acquaintances, [45] and when they did not find him, they returned to Jerusalem, searching for him. [46] After three days they found him in the temple, sitting among the teachers, listening to them and asking them questions. [47] And all who heard him were amazed at his understanding and his answers. [48] And when his parents saw him, they were astonished. And his mother said to him, "Son, why have you treated us so? Behold, your father and I have been searching for you in great distress." [49] And he said to them, "Why were you looking for me? Did you not know that I must be in my Father's house?" [50] And they did not understand the saying that he spoke to them. [51] And he went down with them and came to Nazareth and was submissive to them. And his mother treasured up all these things in her heart. [52] And Jesus increased in wisdom and in stature and in favor with God and man.

  • Please be in prayer for the family of Chris Heisner, the son of Brenda Murr. Chris went home to be with his Lord December 18th.
  • Monday night at 6 PM, we will have our annual candlelight Christmas Eve service with communion.
Scripture

Micah 5:2-5 (ESV)
2 But you, O Bethlehem Ephrathah, who are too little to be among the clans of Judah, from you shall come forth for me one who is to be ruler in Israel, whose coming forth is from of old, from ancient days. 3 Therefore he shall give them up until the time when she who is in labor has given birth; then the rest of his brothers shall return to the people of Israel. 4 And he shall stand and shepherd his flock in the strength of the LORD, in the majesty of the name of the LORD his God. And they shall dwell secure, for now he shall be great to the ends of the earth. 5 And he shall be their peace.

Luke 2:8-20
And in the same region there were shepherds out in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night.  [9] And an angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were filled with fear.  [10] And the angel said to them, "Fear not, for behold, I bring you good news of a great joy that will be for all the people.  [11] For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord.  [12] And this will be a sign for you: you will find a baby wrapped in swaddling cloths and lying in a manger."  [13] And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God and saying, [14] "Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace among those with whom he is pleased!"
[15] When the angels went away from them into heaven, the shepherds said to one another, "Let us go over to Bethlehem and see this thing that has happened, which the Lord has made known to us."  [16] And they went with haste and found Mary and Joseph, and the baby lying in a manger.  [17] And when they saw it, they made known the saying that had been told them concerning this child.  [18] And all who heard it wondered at what the shepherds told them.  [19] But Mary treasured up all these things, pondering them in her heart.  [20] And the shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all they had heard and seen, as it had been told them.

Scripture & Questions for Sunday (12/9/18)

Practice for the Christmas play has begun. Please have your children at church 9:45 AM each Sunday for practice.

Scripture for Sunday
Malachi 3:1-4 (ESV)
"Behold, I send my messenger and he will prepare the way before me. And the Lord whom you seek will suddenly come to his temple; and the messenger of the covenant in whom you delight, behold, he is coming, says the Lord of hosts. [2] But who can endure the day of his coming, and who can stand when he appears? For he is like a refiner's fire and like fullers' soap. [3] He will sit as a refiner and purifier of silver, and he will purify the sons of Levi and refine them like gold and silver, and they will bring offerings in righteousness to the Lord. [4] Then the offering of Judah and Jerusalem will be pleasing to the Lord as in the days of old and as in former years.

Luke 3:1-6 (ESV)
In the fifteenth year of the reign of Tiberius Caesar, Pontius Pilate being governor of Judea, and Herod being tetrarch of Galilee, and his brother Philip tetrarch of the region of Ituraea and Trachonitis, and Lysanias tetrarch of Abilene,  [2] during the high priesthood of Annas and Caiaphas, the word of God came to John the son of Zechariah in the wilderness.  [3] And he went into all the region around the Jordan, proclaiming a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins.  [4] As it is written in the book of the words of Isaiah the prophet, "The voice of one crying in the wilderness: Prepare the way of the Lord, make his paths straight. [5] Every valley shall be filled, and every mountain and hill shall be made low, and the crooked shall become straight, and the rough places shall become level ways, [6] and all flesh shall see the salvation of God."

Jeremiah 33:14-16 (ESV)
14  “Behold, the days are coming, declares the LORD, when I will fulfill the promise I made to the house of Israel and the house of Judah. 15  In those days and at that time I will cause a righteous Branch to spring up for David, and he shall execute justice and righteousness in the land. 16  In those days Judah will be saved, and Jerusalem will dwell securely. Scripture for Sunday (11/25/18)

Scripture for Sunday
Psalm 46:1-11 (ESV)
1 God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. 2 Therefore we will not fear though the earth gives way, though the mountains be moved into the heart of the sea, 3 though its waters roar and foam, though the mountains tremble at its swelling. Selah 4 There is a river whose streams make glad the city of God, the holy habitation of the Most High. 5 God is in the midst of her; she shall not be moved; God will help her when morning dawns. 6 The nations rage, the kingdoms totter; he utters his voice, the earth melts. 7 The LORD of hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our fortress. Selah 8 Come, behold the works of the LORD, how he has brought desolations on the earth. 9 He makes wars cease to the end of the earth; he breaks the bow and shatters the spear; he burns the chariots with fire. 10 “Be still, and know that I am God. I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth!” 11 The LORD of hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our fortress. Selah

Scripture & Questions for Sunday (11/18/18)

Practice for the Christmas play has begun. Please have your children at church 9:45 AM each Sunday for practice.

Scripture for Sunday
Hebrews 10:16-25 (ESV)
16  “This is the covenant that I will make with them after those days, declares the Lord: I will put my laws on their hearts, and write them on their minds,” 17  then he adds, “I will remember their sins and their lawless deeds no more.” 18  Where there is forgiveness of these, there is no longer any offering for sin. 19  Therefore, brothers, since we have confidence to enter the holy places by the blood of Jesus, 20  by the new and living way that he opened for us through the curtain, that is, through his flesh, 21  and since we have a great priest over the house of God, 22  let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, with our hearts sprinkled clean from an evil conscience and our bodies washed with pure water. 23  Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering, for he who promised is faithful. 24  And let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works, 25 not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day drawing near.

Questions for Reflection
1.    Who has encouraged you the most in the last six months?
2.    Why did the author say that those under the new covenant could draw near to God? (10:19-22)
3.    What has Jesus done for those under the new covenant? (10:20)
4.    What privilege comes to those who are part of the "house of God"? (10:22)
5.    What must happen before a person can draw near to God? (10:22)
6.    How could someone best spur you on "toward love and good deeds"?
7.    How do you personally feel about going to church or involvement in Christian groups?
8.    What is behind the ups and downs in your spiritual journey?

Scripture & Questions for Sunday (11/11/18)

Scripture for Sunday
1 Corinthians 12:12-31 (ESV)
12  For just as the body is one and has many members, and all the members of the body, though many, are one body, so it is with Christ. 13  For in one Spirit we were all baptized into one body—Jews or Greeks, slaves or free—and all were made to drink of one Spirit.
14  For the body does not consist of one member but of many. 15  If the foot should say, “Because I am not a hand, I do not belong to the body,” that would not make it any less a part of the body. 16  And if the ear should say, “Because I am not an eye, I do not belong to the body,” that would not make it any less a part of the body. 17  If the whole body were an eye, where would be the sense of hearing? If the whole body were an ear, where would be the sense of smell? 18  But as it is, God arranged the members in the body, each one of them, as he chose. 19  If all were a single member, where would the body be? 20  As it is, there are many parts, yet one body.
21  The eye cannot say to the hand, “I have no need of you,” nor again the head to the feet, “I have no need of you.” 22  On the contrary, the parts of the body that seem to be weaker are indispensable, 23  and on those parts of the body that we think less honorable we bestow the greater honor, and our unpresentable parts are treated with greater modesty, 24  which our more presentable parts do not require. But God has so composed the body, giving greater honor to the part that lacked it, 25  that there may be no division in the body, but that the members may have the same care for one another. 26  If one member suffers, all suffer together; if one member is honored, all rejoice together.
27  Now you are the body of Christ and individually members of it. 28  And God has appointed in the church first apostles, second prophets, third teachers, then miracles, then gifts of healing, helping, administrating, and various kinds of tongues. 29  Are all apostles? Are all prophets? Are all teachers? Do all work miracles? 30  Do all possess gifts of healing? Do all speak with tongues? Do all interpret? 31  But earnestly desire the higher gifts. And I will show you a still more excellent way.

Questions for Reflection
1.    When have you felt insignificant in an organization?
2.    In what way are Christians like a human body? (12:12-13)
3.    Why should outward appearances or status not matter to us? (12:13)
4.    What unifies all Christians? (12:13)
5.    What makes Christians unified and dependent on one another? (12:13)
6.    *What lessons are there in seeing the church as a human body? (12:14-17)
7.    How might you compare your place in the body of Christ to a part of the human body?
8.    How well do you interact with other members in the body of Christ?
9.    When have you felt like an important or insignificant part of the body?
10. What part do you serve in the body of Christ?
11. *How can you treat the "weaker" members of your fellowship as indispensable?

Scripture for Sunday
Matthew 25:1-13 (ESV)
1  “Then the kingdom of heaven will be like ten virgins who took their lamps and went to meet the bridegroom. 2  Five of them were foolish, and five were wise. 3  For when the foolish took their lamps, they took no oil with them, 4  but the wise took flasks of oil with their lamps. 5  As the bridegroom was delayed, they all became drowsy and slept. 6  But at midnight there was a cry, ‘Here is the bridegroom! Come out to meet him.’ 7  Then all those virgins rose and trimmed their lamps. 8  And the foolish said to the wise, ‘Give us some of your oil, for our lamps are going out.’ 9  But the wise answered, saying, ‘Since there will not be enough for us and for you, go rather to the dealers and buy for yourselves.’ 10  And while they were going to buy, the bridegroom came, and those who were ready went in with him to the marriage feast, and the door was shut. 11  Afterward the other virgins came also, saying, ‘Lord, lord, open to us.’ 12  But he answered, ‘Truly, I say to you, I do not know you.’ 13  Watch therefore, for you know neither the day nor the hour.

Scriptures for Sunday
Duet. 6:1-9 (ESV)
"Now this is the commandment, the statutes and the rules that the Lord your God commanded me to teach you, that you may do them in the land to which you are going over, to possess it, [2] that you may fear the Lord your God, you and your son and your son's son, by keeping all his statutes and his commandments, which I command you, all the days of your life, and that your days may be long. [3] Hear therefore, O Israel, and be careful to do them, that it may go well with you, and that you may multiply greatly, as the Lord, the God of your fathers, has promised you, in a land flowing with milk and honey. [4] "Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one. [5] You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might. [6] And these words that I command you today shall be on your heart. [7] You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, and when you walk by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise. [8] You shall bind them as a sign on your hand, and they shall be as frontlets between your eyes. [9] You shall write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates.

Matthew 22:34-40 (ESV)
But when the Pharisees heard that he had silenced the Sadducees, they gathered together. [35] And one of them, a lawyer, asked him a question to test him. [36] "Teacher, which is the great commandment in the Law?" [37] And he said to him, "You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. [38] This is the great and first commandment. [39] And a second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself. [40] On these two commandments depend all the Law and the Prophets."

Scripture
James 5:7-20 (ESV)
7  Be patient, therefore, brothers, until the coming of the Lord. See how the farmer waits for the precious fruit of the earth, being patient about it, until it receives the early and the late rains.
8  You also, be patient. Establish your hearts, for the coming of the Lord is at hand.
9  Do not grumble against one another, brothers, so that you may not be judged; behold, the Judge is standing at the door.
10  As an example of suffering and patience, brothers, take the prophets who spoke in the name of the Lord.
11  Behold, we consider those blessed who remained steadfast. You have heard of the steadfastness of Job, and you have seen the purpose of the Lord, how the Lord is compassionate and merciful.
12  But above all, my brothers, do not swear, either by heaven or by earth or by any other oath, but let your “yes” be yes and your “no” be no, so that you may not fall under condemnation.
13  Is anyone among you suffering? Let him pray. Is anyone cheerful? Let him sing praise.
14  Is anyone among you sick? Let him call for the elders of the church, and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord.
15  And the prayer of faith will save the one who is sick, and the Lord will raise him up. And if he has committed sins, he will be forgiven.
16  Therefore, confess your sins to one another and pray for one another, that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous person has great power as it is working.
17  Elijah was a man with a nature like ours, and he prayed fervently that it might not rain, and for three years and six months it did not rain on the earth.
18  Then he prayed again, and heaven gave rain, and the earth bore its fruit.
19  My brothers, if anyone among you wanders from the truth and someone brings him back,
20  let him know that whoever brings back a sinner from his wandering will save his soul from death and will cover a multitude of sins.

South Llano River Flooding

As many of you know there was a large rise on the river last night and there were some people swept away from the South Llano RV Park. Your local first responders as well as many from agencies around the state responded to help with search and rescue. We are trying to feed the first responders. Tonight (10/8), locals organized by First Baptist Church will be feeding them out at TX Tech where they will be staying. Tomorrow (10/9) morning at 7:30 we will be feeding them breakfast at our church. I have enough cooks but if you would like to come and help serve please come about 7 AM. Lacey Lee is organizing lunch tomorrow which will be served at First Baptist. Dinner tomorrow night is being handled by College Street Church of Christ. As of right now we are not aware of any other needs in the community but as we are informed we will pass them along. Please keep in prayer those who are yet to be found.

Scripture & Questions for Sunday (9/30/18)

Scripture for Sunday
Mark 11:27-33 (ESV)
27  And they came again to Jerusalem. And as he was walking in the temple, the chief priests and the scribes and the elders came to him,
28  and they said to him, “By what authority are you doing these things, or who gave you this authority to do them?”
29  Jesus said to them, “I will ask you one question; answer me, and I will tell you by what authority I do these things.
30  Was the baptism of John from heaven or from man? Answer me.”
31  And they discussed it with one another, saying, “If we say, ‘From heaven,’ he will say, ‘Why then did you not believe him?’
32  But shall we say, ‘From man’?”—they were afraid of the people, for they all held that John really was a prophet.
33  So they answered Jesus, “We do not know.” And Jesus said to them, “Neither will I tell you by what authority I do these things.”

Questions for Reflection
1.    What are some examples of authority?
2.    In what ways should a Christian’s values differ from those of "the experts"?
3.    How did the religious leaders challenge Jesus’ authority? (11:28)
4.    What do Jesus’ actions tell you about His attitude toward the religious leaders of His day? (11:28-33)
5.    How did Jesus answer the challenge put to Him? (11:29-33)
6.    What were the priorities of the chief priests, teachers of the law, and elders who confronted Jesus?
7.    In what ways do human authorities challenge God’s authority?
8.    How can we ensure that we follow God’s authority rather than the "authorities" who challenge His Word?
9.    When have you ever questioned God’s authority in your life?

Scripture & Questions for Sunday (9/16/18)

Scripture for Sunday
ESV  James 3:1-12
1 Not many of you should become teachers, my brothers, for you know that we who teach will be judged with greater strictness.  2 For we all stumble in many ways, and if anyone does not stumble in what he says, he is a perfect man, able also to bridle his whole body.  3 If we put bits into the mouths of horses so that they obey us, we guide their whole bodies as well.  4 Look at the ships also: though they are so large and are driven by strong winds, they are guided by a very small rudder wherever the will of the pilot directs.  5 So also the tongue is a small member, yet it boasts of great things. How great a forest is set ablaze by such a small fire!  6 And the tongue is a fire, a world of unrighteousness. The tongue is set among our members, staining the whole body, setting on fire the entire course of life, and set on fire by hell.  7 For every kind of beast and bird, of reptile and sea creature, can be tamed and has been tamed by mankind,  8 but no human being can tame the tongue. It is a restless evil, full of deadly poison.  9 With it we bless our Lord and Father, and with it we curse people who are made in the likeness of God.  10 From the same mouth come blessing and cursing. My brothers, these things ought not to be so.  11 Does a spring pour forth from the same opening both fresh and salt water?  12 Can a fig tree, my brothers, bear olives, or a grapevine produce figs? Neither can a salt pond yield fresh water.

Questions for Reflection
1.    If you could hear a tape recording of everything you said last week, what would you want to edit out?
2.    How do you react when you hear someone cursing and using abusive language?
3.    How can a person be hurt by the words of others?
4.    What can you learn about a person by listening to him or her speak?
5.    If a person were never at fault in what he or she said, what would that show about the person? (3:2)
6.    What is significant about the way we talk? (3:2)
7.    What is so difficult about taming the tongue? (3:7-8)
8.    How is our speech influenced by others around us?
9.    What practical advice would you give someone who wanted to control his or her tongue better?
10. What weaknesses in our lives does our speech often expose?

Scripture & Questions for Sunday (9/9/18)

Sunday School Kick-Off breakfast this Sunday 9:45 AM.  Please bring a breakfast dish to share.

Scripture for Sunday
James 2:1-17 (ESV)
My brothers, show no partiality as you hold the faith in our Lord Jesus Christ, the Lord of glory.  [2] For if a man wearing a gold ring and fine clothing comes into your assembly, and a poor man in shabby clothing also comes in,  [3] and if you pay attention to the one who wears the fine clothing and say, "You sit here in a good place," while you say to the poor man, "You stand over there," or, "Sit down at my feet,"  [4] have you not then made distinctions among yourselves and become judges with evil thoughts?  [5] Listen, my beloved brothers, has not God chosen those who are poor in the world to be rich in faith and heirs of the kingdom, which he has promised to those who love him?  [6] But you have dishonored the poor man. Are not the rich the ones who oppress you, and the ones who drag you into court?  [7] Are they not the ones who blaspheme the honorable name by which you were called?
[8] If you really fulfill the royal law according to the Scripture, "You shall love your neighbor as yourself," you are doing well.  [9] But if you show partiality, you are committing sin and are convicted by the law as transgressors.  [10] For whoever keeps the whole law but fails in one point has become accountable for all of it.  [11] For he who said, "Do not commit adultery," also said, "Do not murder." If you do not commit adultery but do murder, you have become a transgressor of the law.  [12] So speak and so act as those who are to be judged under the law of liberty.  [13] For judgment is without mercy to one who has shown no mercy. Mercy triumphs over judgment.
[14] What good is it, my brothers, if someone says he has faith but does not have works? Can that faith save him?  [15] If a brother or sister is poorly clothed and lacking in daily food,  [16] and one of you says to them, "Go in peace, be warmed and filled," without giving them the things needed for the body, what good is that?  [17] So also faith by itself, if it does not have works, is dead.

Questions for Reflection
1.    For what reasons might a person think he or she is more important than another person?
2.    Where do you see prejudice being practiced?
3.    What practical example did James use to illustrate how favoritism was practiced in the church? (2:1-4)
4.    What does the church do to the poor person when it shows favoritism toward the rich? (2:6)
5.    Why should we be merciful? (2:13)
6.    How have you shown favoritism or prejudice toward other people?
7.    How do we use physical appearance, job status, and athletic ability to show favoritism toward people?
8.    In what practical ways can we show genuine love to people of different races, cultures, and economic standing?
9.    Why is favoritism or prejudice often overlooked as a sin?

Scripture & Questions for Sunday (9/2/18)

Men's Breakfast Saturday morning 8 AM. Coffee will be on at 6:30 so come early to visit and bring a friend.

Scripture
James 1:17-27 (ESV)
Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights with whom there is no variation or shadow due to change. [18] Of his own will he brought us forth by the word of truth, that we should be a kind of firstfruits of his creation.
[19] Know this, my beloved brothers: let every person be quick to hear, slow to speak, slow to anger; [20] for the anger of man does not produce the righteousness that God requires. [21] Therefore put away all filthiness and rampant wickedness and receive with meekness the implanted word, which is able to save your souls.
[22] But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves. [23] For if anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like a man who looks intently at his natural face in a mirror. [24] For he looks at himself and goes away and at once forgets what he was like. [25] But the one who looks into the perfect law, the law of liberty, and perseveres, being no hearer who forgets but a doer who acts, he will be blessed in his doing.
[26] If anyone thinks he is religious and does not bridle his tongue but deceives his heart, this person's religion is worthless. [27] Religion that is pure and undefiled before God and the Father is this: to visit orphans and widows in their affliction, and to keep oneself unstained from the world.

Questions for Reflection
1.    How does it affect you when a person is caught doing what he or she tells others not to do?
2.    When are you most likely to lose your temper?
3.    What instruction did James give about the relationship between speaking, listening, and anger? (1:19)
4.    What is the relationship between anger and righteous living? (1:20)
5.    What should a Christian clean out of his or her life? (1:21)
6.    What makes it hard for us to be good listeners?
7.    How can being quick to speak and quick to anger get you into trouble?
8.    How do displays of anger and temper affect the witness of a Christian?
9.    What attitudes and habits can inhibit our growth as disciples of Christ?
10. What makes it hard for us to practice what we know to be good?
11. How does our speech reflect our relationship with God?

[41] "Then he will say to those on his left, 'Depart from me, you cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels.  [42] For I was hungry and you gave me no food, I was thirsty and you gave me no drink,  [43] I was a stranger and you did not welcome me, naked and you did not clothe me, sick and in prison and you did not visit me.'  [44] Then they also will answer, saying, 'Lord, when did we see you hungry or thirsty or a stranger or naked or sick or in prison, and did not minister to you?'  [45] Then he will answer them, saying, 'Truly, I say to you, as you did not do it to one of the least of these, you did not do it to me.'  [46] And these will go away into eternal punishment, but the righteous into eternal life."

Micah 6:6-8
"With what shall I come before the LORD, and bow myself before God on high? Shall I come before him with burnt offerings, with calves a year old? 7 Will the LORD be pleased with thousands of rams, with ten thousands of rivers of oil? Shall I give my firstborn for my transgression, the fruit of my body for the sin of my soul?" 8 He has told you, O man, what is good; and what does the LORD require of you but to do justice, and to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God?

8.    When have you, like Micah, felt depressed by all the troubles around you?

Scripture for Sunday
Genesis 4:1-14 (ESV)
Now Adam knew Eve his wife, and she conceived and bore Cain, saying, "I have gotten a man with the help of the Lord." [2] And again, she bore his brother Abel. Now Abel was a keeper of sheep, and Cain a worker of the ground. [3] In the course of time Cain brought to the Lord an offering of the fruit of the ground, [4] and Abel also brought of the firstborn of his flock and of their fat portions. And the Lord had regard for Abel and his offering, [5] but for Cain and his offering he had no regard. So Cain was very angry, and his face fell. [6] The Lord said to Cain, "Why are you angry, and why has your face fallen? [7] If you do well, will you not be accepted? And if you do not do well, sin is crouching at the door. Its desire is for you, but you must rule over it."
[8] Cain spoke to Abel his brother. And when they were in the field, Cain rose up against his brother Abel and killed him. [9] Then the Lord said to Cain, "Where is Abel your brother?" He said, "I do not know; am I my brother's keeper?" [10] And the Lord said, "What have you done? The voice of your brother's blood is crying to me from the ground. [11] And now you are cursed from the ground, which has opened its mouth to receive your brother's blood from your hand. [12] When you work the ground, it shall no longer yield to you its strength. You shall be a fugitive and a wanderer on the earth." [13] Cain said to the Lord, "My punishment is greater than I can bear. [14] Behold, you have driven me today away from the ground, and from your face I shall be hidden. I shall be a fugitive and a wanderer on the earth, and whoever finds me will kill me."

Scripture for Sunday
John 8:1-11 (ESV)
But Jesus went to the Mount of Olives. [2] Early in the morning he came again to the temple. All the people came to him, and he sat down and taught them. [3] The scribes and the Pharisees brought a woman who had been caught in adultery, and placing her in the midst  [4] they said to him, "Teacher, this woman has been caught in the act of adultery. [5] Now in the Law Moses commanded us to stone such women. So what do you say?" [6] This they said to test him, that they might have some charge to bring against him. Jesus bent down and wrote with his finger on the ground. [7] And as they continued to ask him, he stood up and said to them, "Let him who is without sin among you be the first to throw a stone at her." [8] And once more he bent down and wrote on the ground. [9] But when they heard it, they went away one by one, beginning with the older ones, and Jesus was left alone with the woman standing before him. [10] Jesus stood up and said to her, "Woman, where are they? Has no one condemned you?" [11] She said, "No one, Lord." And Jesus said, "Neither do I condemn you; go, and from now on sin no more."]]

Scripture
Mark 13:1-8 (ESV)
And as he came out of the temple, one of his disciples said to him, "Look, Teacher, what wonderful stones and what wonderful buildings!"  [2] And Jesus said to him, "Do you see these great buildings? There will not be left here one stone upon another that will not be thrown down." [3] And as he sat on the Mount of Olives opposite the temple, Peter and James and John and Andrew asked him privately,  [4] "Tell us, when will these things be, and what will be the sign when all these things are about to be accomplished?"  [5] And Jesus began to say to them, "See that no one leads you astray.  [6] Many will come in my name, saying, 'I am he!' and they will lead many astray.  [7] And when you hear of wars and rumors of wars, do not be alarmed. This must take place, but the end is not yet.  [8] For nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. There will be earthquakes in various places; there will be famines. These are but the beginning of the birth pains.

Mark 13:31-37 (ESV)
[31] Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will not pass away. [32] "But concerning that day or that hour, no one knows, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father.  [33] Be on guard, keep awake. For you do not know when the time will come.  [34] It is like a man going on a journey, when he leaves home and puts his servants in charge, each with his work, and commands the doorkeeper to stay awake.  [35] Therefore stay awake—for you do not know when the master of the house will come, in the evening, or at midnight, or when the cock crows, or in the morning— [36] lest he come suddenly and find you asleep.  [37] And what I say to you I say to all: Stay awake."

Scripture for Sunday
Luke 6:27-38 (ESV)
[27] "But I say to you who hear, Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you,  [28] bless those who curse you, pray for those who abuse you. [29] To one who strikes you on the cheek, offer the other also, and from one who takes away your cloak do not withhold your tunic either. [30] Give to everyone who begs from you, and from one who takes away your goods do not demand them back. [31] And as you wish that others would do to you, do so to them.
[32] "If you love those who love you, what benefit is that to you? For even sinners love those who love them. [33] And if you do good to those who do good to you, what benefit is that to you? For even sinners do the same. [34] And if you lend to those from whom you expect to receive, what credit is that to you? Even sinners lend to sinners, to get back the same amount. [35] But love your enemies, and do good, and lend, expecting nothing in return, and your reward will be great, and you will be sons of the Most High, for he is kind to the ungrateful and the evil. [36] Be merciful, even as your Father is merciful. [37] "Judge not, and you will not be judged; condemn not, and you will not be condemned; forgive, and you will be forgiven; [38] give, and it will be given to you. Good measure, pressed down, shaken together, running over, will be put into your lap. For with the measure you use it will be measured back to you."

2 Cor. 9:6-15 (ESV)
The point is this: whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows bountifully will also reap bountifully. [7] Each one must give as he has made up his mind, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver. [8] And God is able to make all grace abound to you, so that having all sufficiency in all things at all times, you may abound in every good work. [9] As it is written,
    "He has distributed freely, he has given to the poor;
        his righteousness endures forever."
[10] He who supplies seed to the sower and bread for food will supply and multiply your seed for sowing and increase the harvest of your righteousness.  [11] You will be enriched in every way for all your generosity, which through us will produce thanksgiving to God. [12] For the ministry of this service is not only supplying the needs of the saints, but is also overflowing in many thanksgivings to God. [13] By their approval of this service, they will glorify God because of your submission flowing from your confession of the gospel of Christ, and the generosity of your contribution for them and for all others, [14] while they long for you and pray for you, because of the surpassing grace of God upon you. [15] Thanks be to God for his inexpressible gift!

Questions for Reflection
1.    What images come to your mind when you hear about a “cheerful giver”?
2.    Who is the most generous person you know? Why do you think so?
3.    What does God provide? (9:10)
4.    What results from the generosity of Christians? (9:11)
5.    Why does God love a cheerful giver over someone who grudgingly gives large sums of money?
6.    Why does giving in a grudging manner make any difference if the need is met?
7.    How should you react when other Christians give generously to you or your family?

SCRIPTURE
Romans 11:25-32 (ESV)
Lest you be wise in your own conceits, I want you to understand this mystery, brothers: a partial hardening has come upon Israel, until the fullness of the Gentiles has come in.  [26] And in this way all Israel will be saved, as it is written,
"The Deliverer will come from Zion,
        he will banish ungodliness from Jacob";
[27] "and this will be my covenant with them
when I take away their sins."
[28] As regards the gospel, they are enemies of God for your sake. But as regards election, they are beloved for the sake of their forefathers.  [29] For the gifts and the calling of God are irrevocable.  [30] Just as you were at one time disobedient to God but now have received mercy because of their disobedience,  [31] so they too have now been disobedient in order that by the mercy shown to you they also may now receive mercy.  [32] For God has consigned all to disobedience, that he may have mercy on all.

Questions for Reflection
1.    How can a bad situation bring good results?
2.    How had Israel responded to the message Paul preached?
3.    What promise has God made to Israel? (11:26-27)
4.    What did Paul say about God’s promises? (11:29)
5.    What makes God’s plan of salvation a mystery?
6.    What does this passage reveal about God’s character?
7.    When has God shown you mercy despite your disobedience?

Scripture & Questions for Sunday (6/24/18)

Scripture for Sunday
Proverbs 18:20-21 (ESV)
From the fruit of a man's mouth his stomach is satisfied; he is satisfied by the yield of his lips.
[21] Death and life are in the power of the tongue, and those who love it will eat its fruits.

Luke 6:39-45 (ESV)
He also told them a parable: "Can a blind man lead a blind man? Will they not both fall into a pit? [40] A disciple is not above his teacher, but everyone when he is fully trained will be like his teacher. [41] Why do you see the speck that is in your brother's eye, but do not notice the log that is in your own eye? [42] How can you say to your brother, 'Brother, let me take out the speck that is in your eye,' when you yourself do not see the log that is in your own eye? You hypocrite, first take the log out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to take out the speck that is in your brother's eye. [43] "For no good tree bears bad fruit, nor again does a bad tree bear good fruit,  [44] for each tree is known by its own fruit. For figs are not gathered from thornbushes, nor are grapes picked from a bramble bush. [45] The good person out of the good treasure of his heart produces good, and the evil person out of his evil treasure produces evil, for out of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaks.

Questions for Reflection
1.    How have you been fooled by someone whose words were contrary to his or her actions?
2.    What specific statements did Jesus make about fruit before applying the same truths to people? (6:43-44)
3.    In what different but related ways is the word “good” used in these verses? (6:43, 45)
4.    What do the tree and fruit symbolize in these words of Jesus? (6:43, 45)
5.    What did Jesus describe as the source of good and evil things? (6:45)
6.    How did Jesus describe the role of the human heart? (6:45)
7.    How do people ultimately know about the state of our hearts? (6:45)
8.    What is it about a person that actually has to change in order for good behavior to be produced?
9.    When was the last time someone helped you examine how your life reflects or doesn’t reflect the presence of Christ?

Scripture & Questions for Sunday (6/17/18)

  • During the week of June 18-22, we are responsible for the summer lunch program.  We will need 4 to 5 people to help each day from 11 am to 1 pm. If you are available and willing to help we will have a brief meeting following worship Sunday morning.
  • Beginning this Sunday there will be a box at the back of the church with note cards. If you have a particular scripture or topic that you would like for us to use write it down and put it in the box. for the rest of the summer Laurie and I will choose a card from the box to preach from each Sunday.
Scripture for Sunday Romans 6:1-14 (ESV)

What shall we say then? Are we to continue in sin that grace may abound? [2] By no means! How can we who died to sin still live in it? [3] Do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? [4] We were buried therefore with him by baptism into death, in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might walk in newness of life.
[5] For if we have been united with him in a death like his, we shall certainly be united with him in a resurrection like his. [6] We know that our old self was crucified with him in order that the body of sin might be brought to nothing, so that we would no longer be enslaved to sin. [7] For one who has died has been set free from sin. [8] Now if we have died with Christ, we believe that we will also live with him. [9] We know that Christ being raised from the dead will never die again; death no longer has dominion over him. [10] For the death he died he died to sin, once for all, but the life he lives he lives to God. [11] So you also must consider yourselves dead to sin and alive to God in Christ Jesus.
[12] Let not sin therefore reign in your mortal bodies, to make you obey their passions. [13] Do not present your members to sin as instruments for unrighteousness, but present yourselves to God as those who have been brought from death to life, and your members to God as instruments for righteousness. [14] For sin will have no dominion over you, since you are not under law but under grace.

Scripture for Sunday
ESV Romans 8:12-25
12 So then, brothers, we are debtors, not to the flesh, to live according to the flesh. 13 For if you live according to the flesh you will die, but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live. 14 For all who are led by the Spirit of God are sons of God. 15 For you did not receive the spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you have received the Spirit of adoption as sons, by whom we cry, "Abba! Father!" 16 The Spirit himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God, 17 and if children, then heirs- heirs of God and fellow heirs with Christ, provided we suffer with him in order that we may also be glorified with him. 18 For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worth comparing with the glory that is to be revealed to us. 19 For the creation waits with eager longing for the revealing of the sons of God. 20 For the creation was subjected to futility, not willingly, but because of him who subjected it, in hope 21 that the creation itself will be set free from its bondage to decay and obtain the freedom of the glory of the children of God. 22 For we know that the whole creation has been groaning together in the pains of childbirth until now. 23 And not only the creation, but we ourselves, who have the firstfruits of the Spirit, groan inwardly as we wait eagerly for adoption as sons, the redemption of our bodies. 24 For in this hope we were saved. Now hope that is seen is not hope. For who hopes for what he sees? 25 But if we hope for what we do not see, we wait for it with patience.

Questions for Reflection

4.    What are the benefits of being a child of God? (8:15-17)
5.    What type of sacrifices do people commonly make for the sake of a future reward?
6.    How did Paul describe the difference between his present and his future? (8:18)

Scripture & Questions for Sunday (5/27/18)

>> Jim and Laurie will be on vacation May 28 through June 6.
>> Men's breakfast in June will be on June 10th, the second Sunday.

Scripture for Sunday
Philip. 4:4-13 (ESV)
Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, Rejoice.  [5] Let your reasonableness be known to everyone. The Lord is at hand;  [6] do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God.  [7] And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.
[8] Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things.  [9] What you have learned and received and heard and seen in me—practice these things, and the God of peace will be with you.
[10] I rejoiced in the Lord greatly that now at length you have revived your concern for me. You were indeed concerned for me, but you had no opportunity.  [11] Not that I am speaking of being in need, for I have learned in whatever situation I am to be content.  [12] I know how to be brought low, and I know how to abound. In any and every circumstance, I have learned the secret of facing plenty and hunger, abundance and need.  [13] I can do all things through him who strengthens me.

Questions for Reflection
1.    How do you tend to respond when things don’t go your way?
2.    What does it take to live at peace with difficult family members or colleagues?
3.    How did Paul tell the Philippian Christians to treat others? (4:5)
4.    What did Paul say about anxiety? (4:6-7)
5.    What were the Philippians to do instead of worrying? (4:6-7)
6.    If you were more thankful, joyful, and gentle, how might your family and friends be affected?
7.    What does it take for you to think worthy thoughts?

This Sunday we celebrate Pentecost please wear red.

Scripture for Sunday
Acts 2:1-13
When the day of Pentecost arrived, they were all together in one place.  [2] And suddenly there came from heaven a sound like a mighty rushing wind, and it filled the entire house where they were sitting. [3] And divided tongues as of fire appeared to them and rested on each one of them. [4] And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit gave them utterance. [5] Now there were dwelling in Jerusalem Jews, devout men from every nation under heaven. [6] And at this sound the multitude came together, and they were bewildered, because each one was hearing them speak in his own language.v[7] And they were amazed and astonished, saying, "Are not all these who are speaking Galileans? [8] And how is it that we hear, each of us in his own native language? [9] Parthians and Medes and Elamites and residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia, [10] Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya belonging to Cyrene, and visitors from Rome, [11] both Jews and proselytes, Cretans and Arabians—we hear them telling in our own tongues the mighty works of God." [12] And all were amazed and perplexed, saying to one another, "What does this mean?" [13] But others mocking said, "They are filled with new wine."

Scripture for Sunday ~ Happy Mother's Day
Philip. 2:1-13 (ESV)
So if there is any encouragement in Christ, any comfort from love, any participation in the Spirit, any affection and sympathy, [2] complete my joy by being of the same mind, having the same love, being in full accord and of one mind. [3] Do nothing from rivalry or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves. [4] Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others. [5] Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus, [6] who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, [7] but made himself nothing, taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men. And being found in human form, [8] he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross. [9] Therefore God has highly exalted him and bestowed on him the name that is above every name, [10] so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, [11] and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.  [12] Therefore, my beloved, as you have always obeyed, so now, not only as in my presence but much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling, [13] for it is God who works in you, both to will and to work for his good pleasure.

Scripture & Questions for Sunday (5/6/18)

No Men's Breakfast Saturday- We will have it Saturday May 12.

Scripture for Sunday
Philip. 1:1-18 (ESV)
Paul and Timothy, servants of Christ Jesus,
To all the saints in Christ Jesus who are at Philippi, with the overseers and deacons: [2] Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.
[3] I thank my God in all my remembrance of you,  [4] always in every prayer of mine for you all making my prayer with joy,  [5] because of your partnership in the gospel from the first day until now.  [6] And I am sure of this, that he who began a good work in you will bring it to completion at the day of Jesus Christ.  [7] It is right for me to feel this way about you all, because I hold you in my heart, for you are all partakers with me of grace, both in my imprisonment and in the defense and confirmation of the gospel.  [8] For God is my witness, how I yearn for you all with the affection of Christ Jesus.  [9] And it is my prayer that your love may abound more and more, with knowledge and all discernment,  [10] so that you may approve what is excellent, and so be pure and blameless for the day of Christ,  [11] filled with the fruit of righteousness that comes through Jesus Christ, to the glory and praise of God.
[12] I want you to know, brothers, that what has happened to me has really served to advance the gospel,  [13] so that it has become known throughout the whole imperial guard and to all the rest that my imprisonment is for Christ.  [14] And most of the brothers, having become confident in the Lord by my imprisonment, are much more bold to speak the word without fear.
[15] Some indeed preach Christ from envy and rivalry, but others from good will.  [16] The latter do it out of love, knowing that I am put here for the defense of the gospel.  [17] The former proclaim Christ out of rivalry, not sincerely but thinking to afflict me in my imprisonment.  [18] What then? Only that in every way, whether in pretense or in truth, Christ is proclaimed, and in that I rejoice. Yes, and I will rejoice,

Scripture & Questions for Sunday (4/29/18)

Sunday after church we will be having a cleanup day. Please bring a sack lunch and wear comfortable clothes to church.

Scripture for Sunday
Acts 17:1-15 (ESV)
Now when they had passed through Amphipolis and Apol lonia, they came to Thessalonica, where there was a synagogue of the Jews.  [2] And Paul went in, as was his custom, and on three Sabbath days he reasoned with them from the Scriptures, [3] explaining and proving that it was necessary for the Christ to suffer and to rise from the dead, and saying, "This Jesus, whom I proclaim to you, is the Christ." [4] And some of them were persuaded and joined Paul and Silas, as did a great many of the devout Greeks and not a few of the leading women. [5] But the Jews were jealous, and taking some wicked men of the rabble, they formed a mob, set the city in an uproar, and attacked the house of Jason, seeking to bring them out to the crowd. [6] And when they could not find them, they dragged Jason and some of the brothers before the city authorities, shouting, "These men who have turned the world upside down have come here also, [7] and Jason has received them, and they are all acting against the decrees of Caesar, saying that there is another king, Jesus." [8] And the people and the city authorities were disturbed when they heard these things. [9] And when they had taken money as security from Jason and the rest, they let them go.
[10] The brothers immediately sent Paul and Silas away by night to Berea, and when they arrived they went into the Jewish synagogue. [11] Now these Jews were more noble than those in Thessalonica; they received the word with all eagerness, examining the Scriptures daily to see if these things were so. [12] Many of them therefore believed, with not a few Greek women of high standing as well as men. [13] But when the Jews from Thessalonica learned that the word of God was proclaimed by Paul at Berea also, they came there too, agitating and stirring up the crowds. [14] Then the brothers immediately sent Paul off on his way to the sea, but Silas and Timothy remained there. [15] Those who conducted Paul brought him as far as Athens, and after receiving a command for Silas and Timothy to come to him as soon as possible, they departed.

Scripture for Sunday
Acts 9:1-19
1 But Saul, still breathing threats and murder against the disciples of the Lord, went to the high priest 2 and asked him for letters to the synagogues at Damascus, so that if he found any belonging to the Way, men or women, he might bring them bound to Jerusalem. 3 Now as he went on his way, he approached Damascus, and suddenly a light from heaven flashed around him. 4 And falling to the ground he heard a voice saying to him, "Saul, Saul, why are you persecuting me?" 5 And he said, "Who are you, Lord?" And he said, "I am Jesus, whom you are persecuting. 6 But rise and enter the city, and you will be told what you are to do." 7 The men who were traveling with him stood speechless, hearing the voice but seeing no one. 8 Saul rose from the ground, and although his eyes were opened, he saw nothing. So they led him by the hand and brought him into Damascus. 9 And for three days he was without sight, and neither ate nor drank.
10 Now there was a disciple at Damascus named Ananias. The Lord said to him in a vision, "Ananias." And he said, "Here I am, Lord." 11 And the Lord said to him, "Rise and go to the street called Straight, and at the house of Judas look for a man of Tarsus named Saul, for behold, he is praying, 12 and he has seen in a vision a man named Ananias come in and lay his hands on him so that he might regain his sight." 13 But Ananias answered, "Lord, I have heard from many about this man, how much evil he has done to your saints at Jerusalem. 14 And here he has authority from the chief priests to bind all who call on your name." 15 But the Lord said to him, "Go, for he is a chosen instrument of mine to carry my name before the Gentiles and kings and the children of Israel. 16 For I will show him how much he must suffer for the sake of my name." 17 So Ananias departed and entered the house. And laying his hands on him he said, "Brother Saul, the Lord Jesus who appeared to you on the road by which you came has sent me so that you may regain your sight and be filled with the Holy Spirit." 18 And immediately something like scales fell from his eyes, and he regained his sight. Then he rose and was baptized; 19 and taking food, he was strengthened. For some days he was with the disciples at Damascus.

Scripture for Sunday (4/15/18)

Scripture for Sunday
John 21:1-19 (ESV)
After this Jesus revealed himself again to the disciples by the Sea of Tiberias, and he revealed himself in this way.  [2] Simon Peter, Thomas (called the Twin), Nathanael of Cana in Galilee, the sons of Zebedee, and two others of his disciples were together.  [3] Simon Peter said to them, "I am going fishing." They said to him, "We will go with you." They went out and got into the boat, but that night they caught nothing.
[4] Just as day was breaking, Jesus stood on the shore; yet the disciples did not know that it was Jesus.  [5] Jesus said to them, "Children, do you have any fish?" They answered him, "No."  [6] He said to them, "Cast the net on the right side of the boat, and you will find some." So they cast it, and now they were not able to haul it in, because of the quantity of fish.  [7] That disciple whom Jesus loved therefore said to Peter, "It is the Lord!" When Simon Peter heard that it was the Lord, he put on his outer garment, for he was stripped for work, and threw himself into the sea.  [8] The other disciples came in the boat, dragging the net full of fish, for they were not far from the land, but about a hundred yards off.
[9] When they got out on land, they saw a charcoal fire in place, with fish laid out on it, and bread.  [10] Jesus said to them, "Bring some of the fish that you have just caught."  [11] So Simon Peter went aboard and hauled the net ashore, full of large fish, 153 of them. And although there were so many, the net was not torn.  [12] Jesus said to them, "Come and have breakfast." Now none of the disciples dared ask him, "Who are you?" They knew it was the Lord.  [13] Jesus came and took the bread and gave it to them, and so with the fish.  [14] This was now the third time that Jesus was revealed to the disciples after he was raised from the dead.
[15] When they had finished breakfast, Jesus said to Simon Peter, "Simon, son of John, do you love me more than these?" He said to him, "Yes, Lord; you know that I love you." He said to him, "Feed my lambs."  [16] He said to him a second time, "Simon, son of John, do you love me?" He said to him, "Yes, Lord; you know that I love you." He said to him, "Tend my sheep."  [17] He said to him the third time, "Simon, son of John, do you love me?" Peter was grieved because he said to him the third time, "Do you love me?" and he said to him, "Lord, you know everything; you know that I love you." Jesus said to him, "Feed my sheep.  [18] Truly, truly, I say to you, when you were young, you used to dress yourself and walk wherever you wanted, but when you are old, you will stretch out your hands, and another will dress you and carry you where you do not want to go."  [19] (This he said to show by what kind of death he was to glorify God.) And after saying this he said to him, "Follow me."

7.    Who are Jesus’ sheep?

Scripture for Sunday (4/8/18)

Scripture for Sunday
John 20:19-31 (ESV)
On the evening of that day, the first day of the week, the doors being locked where the disciples were for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood among them and said to them, "Peace be with you."
[20] When he had said this, he showed them his hands and his side. Then the disciples were glad when they saw the Lord. [21] Jesus said to them again, "Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, even so I am sending you." [22] And when he had said this, he breathed on them and said to them, "Receive the Holy Spirit. [23] If you forgive the sins of anyone, they are forgiven; if you withhold forgiveness from anyone, it is withheld."
[24] Now Thomas, one of the Twelve, called the Twin, was not with them when Jesus came. [25] So the other disciples told him, "We have seen the Lord." But he said to them, "Unless I see in his hands the mark of the nails, and place my finger into the mark of the nails, and place my hand into his side, I will never believe."
[26] Eight days later, his disciples were inside again, and Thomas was with them. Although the doors were locked, Jesus came and stood among them and said, "Peace be with you."  [27] Then he said to Thomas, "Put your finger here, and see my hands; and put out your hand, and place it in my side. Do not disbelieve, but believe."  [28] Thomas answered him, "My Lord and my God!"  [29] Jesus said to him, "Have you believed because you have seen me? Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed."
[30] Now Jesus did many other signs in the presence of the disciples, which are not written in this book;  [31] but these are written so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name.

Scripture for Sunday
John 19:16-22 (ESV)
So he delivered him over to them to be crucified.  So they took Jesus, [17] and he went out, bearing his own cross, to the place called the place of a skull, which in Aramaic is called Golgotha. [18] There they crucified him, and with him two others, one on either side, and Jesus between them. [19] Pilate also wrote an inscription and put it on the cross. It read, "Jesus of Nazareth, the King of the Jews." [20] Many of the Jews read this inscription, for the place where Jesus was crucified was near the city, and it was written in Aramaic, in Latin, and in Greek. [21] So the chief priests of the Jews said to Pilate, "Do not write, 'The King of the Jews,' but rather, 'This man said, I am King of the Jews.' " [22] Pilate answered, "What I have written I have written."

Scripture & Questions for Sunday (3/11/18)

Announcements:

  • Please keep the Colston family in your prayers. Bobby and Diane lost their daughter-in-law this week.
  • Please pray for Andrew Helton and our Library staff and please don't be upset with any of them over the Eckankar meeting that is taking place on Saturday. This is not their fault. As a County facility the Library cannot "cherry pick" what groups use the meeting room.
  • Eckankar is not affiliated with any other religious group. Followers believe its purpose is to help individuals find their way back to God through direct personal spiritual experiences. It is not a Christian religion. I am praying that they will not get a foothold in our community.

Scripture for Sunday
John 18:28-40 (ESV)
Then they led Jesus from the house of Caiaphas to the governor's headquarters. It was early morning. They themselves did not enter the governor's headquarters, so that they would not be defiled, but could eat the Passover.  [29] So Pilate went outside to them and said, "What accusation do you bring against this man?"  [30] They answered him, "If this man were not doing evil, we would not have delivered him over to you."  [31] Pilate said to them, "Take him yourselves and judge him by your own law." The Jews said to him, "It is not lawful for us to put anyone to death."  [32] This was to fulfill the word that Jesus had spoken to show by what kind of death he was going to die.
[33] So Pilate entered his headquarters again and called Jesus and said to him, "Are you the King of the Jews?"  [34] Jesus answered, "Do you say this of your own accord, or did others say it to you about me?"  [35] Pilate answered, "Am I a Jew? Your own nation and the chief priests have delivered you over to me. What have you done?"  [36] Jesus answered, "My kingdom is not of this world. If my kingdom were of this world, my servants would have been fighting, that I might not be delivered over to the Jews. But my kingdom is not from the world."  [37] Then Pilate said to him, "So you are a king?" Jesus answered, "You say that I am a king. For this purpose I was born and for this purpose I have come into the world— to bear witness to the truth. Everyone who is of the truth listens to my voice."  [38] Pilate said to him, "What is truth?"
After he had said this, he went back outside to the Jews and told them, "I find no guilt in him.  [39] But you have a custom that I should release one man for you at the Passover. So do you want me to release to you the King of the Jews?"  [40] They cried out again, "Not this man, but Barabbas!" Now Barabbas was a robber.
